WEBHITZÒ Web Menus User Manual

Introduction

In order to use the special WEBHITZÒ Web menus you must be on a computer system that is logged onto the Internet and using a current version of a Web browser that supports Java scripts (this list includes all current America OnLine subscribers, Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) versions 4 and 5, and all Netscape versions 3, 4 or higher.  It is highly recommended that you use the latest version of a Web browser because this typically corrects security problems, along with allowing Web technologies (like Java scripts) that are utilized by a growing number of Web sites to work correctly.  When you upgrade your Web browser it almost always includes what are called “plug-ins” which are software programs that enhance your Web browser and, therefore, your Web “experience”.

Set this as your main “start page” or “home page” you will find it extremely easy to access a wide variety of Web sites.[1]

If you correctly typed in the Web address above you should see what is in picture #1 below.  The top right pull-down menu category shows “WPR-NPR” which is for accessing the most popular WPR and National Public Radio Web sites.  If you know of any that you would like to see included into this easy-to-use pull down menu system, please email me at pgreene@infostar.com with your suggestions.

Picture #1: The main starting screen for the “WPR-NPR” WEBHITZÒ Web menus

The WEBHITZÒ Web menus screen is divided up into 3 separate Web pages, presented to the end-user, you, as what are called “frames”.  The “framing” features and syntax of writing Web pages in HTML code (HyperText Markup Language) allows the WEBHITZÒ Web menus to function as they do.  The top most frame (notice that the background color is always “yellow”) gives you quick access to the other available WEBHITZÒ Web menus from the very top left where it says “eMenus”.

eMenus

If you click on the down arrow to the right of “eMenus” you will see a pull-down list of the other WEBHITZÒ Web menus: Web Home, Computer, Entertainment, Extreme Sports, Family & Kids, Meeting Planners, Shopping, Sports, Travel, WebMaster.  To access any of the above listed WEBHITZÒ Web menus simply make your selection and your WEBHITZÒ Web menus will change to the choice you just made.  As an example, if you decided to select the “Web Home” WEBHITZÒ Web menu then you would see the same screen as picture #2 as shown below.

Picture #2: The “Web Home” WEBHITZÒ Web menu.  Notice the background color of the top most frame is always colored yellow.

There are several important differences for you to make note of.  First, the readily apparent difference between the “WPR-NPR” WEBHITZÒ Web menu and the “Web Home” WEBHITZÒ Web menu is that the top left category is “Weather” and not “WPR-NPR”.  The reason for this is because all other users of the WEBHITZÒ Web menus have access to the “Web Home” menu as their starting menu.  Another important difference that is not so easily noticed is that there can be differences in the number of links that are available via all the other categories listed in the “WPR-NPR” menu and the “Web Home” menu.  Why?  The “Web Home” menu is keep up-to-date on a regular basis, sometimes additions may be made daily.  Additions to the “WPR-NPR” menu are made approximately every 3 months.   Therefore, you might find it useful to check out the “Web Home” menu on a regular basis.

The categories that seem to be most often updated on the “Web Home” menu are “References”, “Searching & Portals”, “Investments” and “Politics”.  Lastly, notice that the background color for both the “WPR-NPR” and “Web Home” menus are sky blue.  When you make another WEBHITZÒ Web menu selection such as “Computer” you will see that the background color is light orange as depicted below in picture #3.  All other WEBHITZÒ Web menus will have different colored backgrounds to make it easier for you to know which WEBHITZÒ Web menu you are currently using.

Picture #3: Notice the different orange background color of the “Computer” WEBHITZÒ Web menu

The “Computer” WEBHITZÒ Web menu gives you quick access to lots of useful and valuable Web resources that relate to computers and technology.  If you want to keep up with this fast paced industry then this is the menu for you!  The main categories covered are: publications (includes magazines and newsletters), technical support, software (includes lots of shareware Web sites), companies (the most popular), tradeshows (includes conferences and expositions), associations, industry news (there might be some overlap with the publications category), and training & education.  An important point to mention now is that you should not be surprised to see the same Web resource listed in more than 1 category within a particular WEBHITZÒ Web menu, as well as it appearing in another WEBHITZÒ Web menu.  A good example of such a valuable Web resource would be the “FedEx package tracking Web page”.

eShopping

If you are interesting in shopping online then the “eShopping” menus are for you.  The “eShopping” menu is easily selected by clicking on the down arrow next to either the “eMenus” and choosing “eShopping” or by clicking on the down arrow next to “eShopping” (the pull down menu that is listed second across the top frame with the yellow background) and choosing “eShopping menu”.  The WEBHITZÒ eShopping menu is organized by category and has a wide variety of online merchants that are easily accessible.  As an example, within the “Auto Stores” category (on the very top left of the eShopping menu) you will find the manufacturers’ Official Web sites available along with a long list of other Web resources that you should find extremely useful.

Picture #4: The “eShopping” WEBHITZÒ Web menu

What else can you access via the “eShopping pull down menu list”?  As an example, if you click on the down arrow next to “eShopping” and select “mySimon” you will be taken to the Internet shopping resource called “mySimon” (see picture #5).  The mySimon Web site will be displayed in the main frame of the WEBHITZÒ menu.  Rather than writing down, bookmarking or making mySimon a favorite in your Web browser, now all you have to do is use the WEBHITZÒ Web menus to get back to it again.  You can always get back to the main start page of the WPR-NPR WEBHITZÒ Web menus by clicking on the back button within your Web browser (you may have to click several times).  If you have set-up the following Web page as your “start” or “home” page – http://www.webhitz.com/ - then just click on the “home” button within your Web browser.

Picture #5: This shows how the Web site “mySimon” appears in the WEBHITZÒ Web menu.  You can easily navigate within the mySimon Web site or to go back click on the “back” button in your Web browser.

You will find many other popular “eShopping” Web sites that are easily accessible via the “eShopping” pull down menu.  Web sites such as Amazon, eBay, Barnes and Noble, and others are very easy to get to.  Try using our WEBHITZÒ  Web menus to see how easy it really is.

eServices

If you are interested in accessing the wide variety of services that are available online then the “eServices” menu choices are for you.  The “eServices” pull down menu is located on the very top, to the right of the “eShopping” pull down menu within the “yellow” background colored frame.  The services selected for placement within this pull down menu have been chosen for their value and usefulness.  There are many to choose from!  The category is organized alphabetically by the name of the service.  It is highly recommended that you familiarize yourself with what you have available from our WEBHITZÒ “eServices” pull down menu.

As an example, select “FedEx Track” from within the “services” and you will be taken to the FedEx package tracking Web page as shown in picture #6.  Note that you can also get to the FedEx page through the “References” category of the “Web Home” menu or the special “WPR-NPR” main menu.

Picture #6: This shows how the “FedEx Package Tracking page” appears in the WEBHITZÒ Web menu.  This page is accessible via the pull-down menu under “services” or from the “Web Home” and custom “WPR-NPR” menu under the “References” category.  You can easily navigate within the FedEx Web site or to go back click on the “back” button in your Web browser.

eStates

Why do you have access to all of the 50 state home pages?  They provide access to valuable information.  Consider them as resources for when you travel, vacation, moving or relocating, for emergency or natural disaster situations such as tornadoes or hurricanes, job hunting and more.  The “eStates” pull down menu is located on the very top right, to the left of the “eServices” pull down menu within the “yellow” background colored frame.  The category is organized alphabetically by the name of the state.

It is highly recommended that you familiarize yourself with what you have available from our WEBHITZÒ “eStates” pull down menu.   As an example you are referred to picture #7 to see the state of Wisconsin home page.  To visit any of the other 50 states simply make your selection from the “estates” pull down menu.  It simply doesn’t get any easier then this!

The Bottom Frame or “Vertical Category Scroller”

This is another “value-added” feature of your special version of the WEBHITZÒ Web menus.  You will notice several things about the bottom frame.  First, to the very left you have 1-click access to my very 1st eliving™ Guide.  If you click on this Web enabled link you will launch the Web page that contains this short, and extremely informative online guide.  Second, right in the middle of the bottom frame is the “Vertical Category Scroller”.  It is customized for my use to communicate with you.  As you watch the “categories” vertically scroll you will notice that if you place your cursor over them, that they too are Web enabled!  I have placed links in them to the WPR.org home page, to WPR Live (click on this to listen to WPR radio over the Internet with Real Audio, the WPR Web cast schedule, my recent Top 10 Web site selections, my special Tech Links page, and a link to my 2nd eliving™ Guide summary.  When you click on any of the “Vertical Category Scroller” selections it will launch or open a second Web browser window.

If you are an online business and are interested in a premium giveaway version of our WEBHITZÒ Web menus to promote your Web site and communicate more effectively and timely with your customers please feel free to contact Peter Greene at pgreene@infostar.com for more information.  Versions start at only $99 and give you complete control over the bottom frame and the “Vertical Category Scroller” for your own use for an entire year!

Instructions on How to Change and Make the “WPR-NPR WEBHITZÒ Web Menus” Your New “Home” or “Start” Page

So, what is the default “home” page or “start” page?  Simply, it is the Web page that first comes up on your screen when you start your Web browser.  Listed below are instructions for the most popular web browsers; or follow their instructions for setting home page preferences. The following is very important - you should write down what your present default “home” page or “start” page is in case you ever want to use it again.  Or, just as easily, you could make your current “home” or “start page” an entry in your bookmarks or favorites.

The first thing to do after you have made note of what your present “start” or “home” page is, is to start your Web browser and then continue with the instructions below:

AOL (America-Online):  Make sure you are logged on to AOL before you begin, otherwise you cannot access your personal settings that you are trying to change.  Additionally, since AOL uses Microsoft’s Internet Explorer for its Web browser there are some similarities.  Therefore, the changes you need to make to your AOL preferences may be very similar to the Microsoft IE 3.x, 4, or 5 instructions.  If you have AOL version 4 or 5 it may be easier to follow the instructions for Internet Explorer versions 4 or 5.

When you have logged on to AOL and have access to the Internet and World Wide Web, click on the “My AOL” icon near the top center of your screen next to “Favorites”.  Next, click on “Preferences”.  Within this next screen click on “WWW” s you can change your “Internet Properties” which is where your “Home page” is set-up (you are usually taken to the “General” tab of Internet Options). If you have already typed in and loaded the Web address http://www.webhitz.com/ then simply click on “Use Current”, or in the box where it reads "http://www.aol.com", change it to

http://www.webhitz.com/, click the "OK" button at the bottom of the "AOL Internet Properties" page, it is now saved and you’re done.

Netscape (versions of 3.x): Instead of Preferences, click on General Preferences, and then click on the Appearance tab - then change the Home Page Location: as shown above. Click on OK at bottom to save. Now you can go directly to the "http://www.webhitz.com/" home page by clicking on the Home button.

Netscape 4.x and higher:  (also known as Communicator) - click on Edit, then Preferences, from the "Category Window" on the left click on Navigator; then where you see "Location:" in the middle box for "Home Page" type in

http://www.webhitz.com/ Note: make sure the circle next to "Navigator starts with" Home Page is blackened or selected.

Microsoft Internet Explorer:  Highly recommend you use "non-BETA" versions of 3.x, 4.x and 5.x.

Microsoft Internet Explorer (Version 3.x): Click on View, then click on Options, then click on the tab marked Navigation.  Put the following: http://www.webhitz.com/ into the box to the right of the word “Address”. Then click on the word “Apply” at the bottom right of your screen; then click on “OK”.   From your top menu, click on “Go” and then Start Page and your new

default home page is http://www.webhitz.com/.  An Important Note: Only "non-BETA" versions of 3.x and greater supports frames and Java technology correctly.
